GOING DUTCH- THE GOTHIC CHAIR

This new brood of designer darlings are in a league of their own. As the duo from Studio Job declares: “We want to keep creating what we want, when we want, with the means of our own choosing.” Sjoerd Vroonland, Bertjan Pot and Studio Job (made up of duo Werner Lippert and Job Smeets) are responsible for this year’s key releases by Moooi, a design label celebrating its decade-long presence in the design industry. Based in Breda, the Netherlands, Moooi, one of the creative brands handled by Space in Singapore, was founded in 2001 by Marcel Wanders and Casper Vissers.  For an interview with Poster Magazine the pair talk about one of the items from their current collection- the Gothic Chair. Gothic Chair The Knights Of the Round Table are given a modern take with Studio Job’s Gothic Chair. Available in a bright spectrum of ten colours, the chair’s design includes ‘studs’ which line the edge of the chair, typical of neo-gothic chairs as they hold upholstery in place. The Gothic Chair is ideal for outdoor use as well. What was your inspiration for the Gothic Chair? When you look closely at our objects you will discover that, within the piece, we often punish modernism and celebrate art. That would at least point out we are inspired by it, right? But, Studio Job does have a different starting point. We are not here to serve any purpose or client, but here to create our own specific universe where every single piece has its own position. Our work is quite theatrical in that sense. Like one big installation. Whether in design or in art, in the end our motivation is quite simple – to continue (as long as physically possible) to create autonomous pieces in an independent context. We want to keep creating what we want, when we want, with the means of our own choosing.
